The Historical Places In Delhi  :-

INTRODUCTION :-


- Delhi is the capital of India.
- It is situated on the westen banks of the river Yamuna and the other side is protected by the ridge.
- Thus it holds an unrivaled strategic location in the country.
- Delhi had been the capital of several rulers due to its central and strategic situation.
- Even before today, all civilized people adorned it as a capital.
- All the rulers preferred it to be the capital and the British in 1911 decided to make Delhi the capital.
- The British first considered Calcutta as the capital, but later on 12 December 1911 AD.    Emperor George V again considered Delhi as the capital.
- This city has been at the forefront of things like royalty, art skills and learning and wisdom. - The tall and historical buildings here show that this city has been built many times and is desolate many times.
- Delhi is the most important railway centre, being the head quarter of the Northern Zone of Indian railway and is excellently connected to all other zones.


RED FORT :-


Open :- 10am to 8pm daily.

- Known as Lal Qila ( Lal means red and Qila means fort ) , it is laid out along the river Yamuna as an irregular octagon.
- This fort made of red stone by Shah Jahan is one of the best forts in the country.
- This fort was built in the 17th century, when it shifted its capital from Agra to Delhi.
- This unusual octagonal fort is spread over an area of two kilometers.
- It is surrounded by a wall of about 2.4 kilometers in circumference and is built of Red Sandstone.
- A 75 foot deep moat surrounds the fort which was filled with water during the war.
- The fort's has two main entrance , the Delhi Gate and therefore the Lahori Gate which faces the famed Chandni Chowk Markets.
- In the basement of the fort's is a market where several traditional Indian's goods can be purchased at nominal rates.
- It has three doors - Lahore Darwaza, Delhi Darwaza and Elephant Darwaza, which are excellent examples of the skills of the architect.
- In this fort, nowadays there are pavilion, garden, tech, marble made Moti Masjid, shops, two museums and war memorial etc.
- Other places of interest in the fort are Naubat Khana, Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas, Rang Mahal and Khas Mahal etc.
- Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the tricolor here on 15 August 1947, the auspicious day of India's independence, since then this tradition is still going on and every year the Prime Minister hoists the tricolor here.
- Another attraction is the Lighting and Sounding Show held in the evenings.


QUTUB MINAR : -

- This tower very high above the Lalkot memorial is one of the most famous places in Delhi. - The tower of 92.5 meters high is 14.4 meters in diameter on the ground and its height is 2.4 meters in height.
- This 72 m (236ft.) Victory tower - the tallest stone tower in India with 376 steps - was built into commemorate the caputre of Delhi.
- A fine example of Islamic architecture, it is made of red and buff sandstone and features intricately carved inscriptions of Koran quotations.
- Three floors of this five-storey building are made of red stone and two floors are made of marble and red stone.
- The first block of this building was built by Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan, who was called Prithvi Lat, but after the rule of the Muslims, Qutubuddin Aibak started the construction of the second storeys in 1193, due to which it was named Qutub Minar.
- After his death, his son-in-law and successor Shamshuddin Iltutmish got it completed.        - According to the Devanagari language inscription in the tower, the tower was damaged in 1326 and it was repaired by Muhammad bin Tughluq.
- Later in 1368, Ferozeshah removed its upper storey and added two more floors to it, each section of this tower is separated from the balcony.
- Near it are the mausoleums of Adham Khan, son of Sultan Iltutmish, Alauddin, Balban and Akbar's foster mother.


INDIA GATE : -

- At the eastern end of Rajpath is India Gate, a memorial dedicated to the soldiers who died during World War I st.
- This memorial was built in 1931 in the memory of the Indian Army martyrs who died in the First World War.
- Earlier it was known as All India War Memorial.
- Its foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Connaught HRH in 1921 and inaugurated by Lady Irwin.
- The names of 13,516 soldiers who were martyred in the First World War are inscribed on it. - This archway of 42 meters height was designed or The 42m (137 - ft.) Memorial, which features an eternal flame, is yet another work by Lutyens.
- Amar Jawan Jyoti was ignited here in 1971, which keeps on burning continuously.
- The sight of this monument is amazing with flood lights installed here at night.
- Along with this, a fountain adorned with colorful lights is visible.
- The green lawns that surround the memorial are a popular picnic spot among locals, especially on summer nights.


RAJGHAT : -


Open :- Sunrise - Sunset.

- This place is famous as the Samadhi of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.
- After Gandhi was killed by a Hindu fanatic on Jan. 30, 1948, his body was cremated on the banks of the Yamuna River in Delhi.
- This site is now a national shrine to the Mahatma ("Great Soul").
- The sand stone walls enclosing the shrine are inscribed with various passages written by Gandhiji.
- The site around this tomb has been converted into a garden.
- A prayer meeting is held here Every Friday evening a prayer.
- The Gandhi Museum is located near Rajghat, in which there are pictures and articles of the objects used by Mahatma Gandhi and the memories of his life.
- Along with the museum, there is also a library on Gandhi literature.
- The museum is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm in addition to Monday.
